Colburn, BPPA Treasurer “The mint makes it first, it is up to you to make it last” Greetings I hope this writing finds you all well. Summer is upon us. Remem- ber to take some well deserved time away for yourselves and your families to enjoy our short, but welcome reprieve from this past winter. Active Duty Death W e lost a brother officer, Joseph M. Zanoli on May 7, 2015 at the young age of forty six. Joe was assigned toArea C-11 and was a lateral from the Lowell Police Department. In his short time with the Boston Police Department Joe earned the trust and respect of all whom he came into contact with. Joe’s walk-by was very well attended by all ranks of the department. If you took the time to attend the wake or funeral, I, on behalf of Joe’s family, friends and colleagues thank you. Joe leaves behind two sons. A fund has been established at the BPPA. Please count your blessings and contribute if you are able. I would like to take a moment to thank a group of officers who donated their personal time to represent the BPPA in Long Island, NewYork at Officer Brian Moore’s funeral. These officers worked the grills to a line we never thought would end. To our fellow BPPA members who made the trip to pay respects to one of NewYork’s Fin- est cut down in the line of duty - THANKYOU!!! Following the services in Long Island, the canteen trailer was packed up and en-route to Suffolk Downs for theWoundedWar- rior motor cycle run/benefit the following morning. It is estimated between the two days over three thousand officers, veterans and sup- porters were served breakfast and lunch. If you are having a barbecue this summer I can honestly recommend the following officers as grille masters. AreaA Matt Carey and Jim Carnell Area B DaveBianchetto, Scott Lucas and FrankOrtiz Area C Louie Lopes and Jack Rogers Area D Dan Fullam and Dan McCarthy Special Operations Kevin Griffiths Drug Depository Joe Nee YVSF Manny Canuto These officers stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park, a great job by all. Thank you. If anyone is interested in volun- teering in the future please reach out to me and let me know. Upcoming Events Graduation Day –We welcome forty one new recruits to our ranks. It is also our annual Retirement Banquet. This event will be held at the Venezia Restaurant. This promises to be a great evening – get your tickets early. Night at the Museum – Friday, October 9 th . BPPA Company Night at the Museum of Science (See notice on page 10). For Sale Challenge Coins –We have a limited supply of BPPA 50 th An- niversary commemorative challenge coins for sale at the BPPA. The coins are $10.00 each. The coin is quite impressive. They are going quick and when they are going they are gone. If you ever had the pleasure of doing the detail at Harry the Greek’s you’ll certainly remember this line, “Line em up – get em while they’re hot!” These coins are hot, be sure to secure one for yourself. Dental Plan Update D uring the month of April (open enrollment) an audit of the BPPA dental plan was conducted. The reason for the audit was simply to explore different avenues in an attempt to save our associa- tion, as a whole, money. Several brokers were contacted to “shop” our dental plan around. As a result we have severed ties with our old broker who had been doing business with the BPPA for the past twenty years. We went in a new direction with Boston Common- wealthAdvantage LLC (BCA). With BCA representing the BPPA we have realized a savings of $51,000.00. Nothing has changed to your dental plan . The only change is to the broker of record. Remain Vigilant I n light of what occurred in our City on Tuesday, June 2 nd , let us first be forever grateful that our officers were not killed or injured. I implore all offices to remain vigilant. Not only during your tours of duty but also while performing paid details, travelling to and from court and to and from home. Wear a jacket over your uniform shirt while commuting. There is no need to “fly the colors.” I am not an alarmist but we unfortunately have experienced terrorism in the City. It is here, thankfully our officers survived the attack. Stay prepared and remain vigilant. I spoke to anAcademy instructor and was furnished with the follow- ing: Tactical Refreshers and Reminders Keep subject 4’ to 6’ away from you Gun side away Keep your hands above your waist, to ward off potential assaults or threats See Treasury on page 35
